After awakening on the morning of July 2, 1777, and viewing the beautiful valley below, the party of Franciscan friars and Spanish soldiers celebrated mass on Altar Rock and named their "discovery" Visitacion Valley in honor of the Catholic Feast of the Visitacion. The massive rock still stands, occupying most of the backyard of a local resident.

A group of children take a break from playing baseball. Notice how undeveloped Visitacion Valley still was in the mid-1920s.

Relocating to Visitacion Valley in 1926, Schlage Lock was a major employer for the next 70 years. These images from a 1936 catalog depict the executive office building, which has been preserved for future community use, as well as the factory, now demolished and awaiting the development of new housing and retail spaces on the site.
