Volunteers are an essential part of the day-to-day operations of the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society.
Barbary Coast Trail® Docents
Barbary Coast Trail Docents bring history to the public! Docents conduct walking tours of the 3.8 mile historical trail through Union Square, Chinatown, the Financial District, and the waterfront. The trail is divided into four parts. Training is individually designed and includes observing tours, mastering tour information, developing a tour script or outline, attending tour techniques workshop and presenting practice tours.
Hours will generally be Saturday mornings; occasionally other weekend or weekday hours for custom tours. Tours happen rain or shine; terrain is mostly flat except for the segment that includes Telegraph Hill. Minimum commitment is one tour per month for one year. Docent, public speaking, teaching, visitor services or similar experience is helpful but not required.
This job is perfect for: volunteers with deep interest in San Francisco history, who want to share that history with the public and learn more themselves, and want to make a long-term commitment to SFMHS.
Event Crew Members
Event Crew Members make SFMHS events possible! Responsibilities include assisting with event set-up, visitor registration or check-in, food and wine service, and clean-up after events. Volunteers will assist with a wide variety of tasks and could be on their feet for several hours. Training will generally take place on the job or immediately before the event.
Hours will vary; typically weekday evenings or weekend days or evenings. Locations will variety. Minimum commitment is one event. Repeat volunteers are encouraged and welcomed!
This job is perfect for: volunteers with busy schedules who want to contribute to SFMHS on weekday evenings or weekends.
