San Francisco and the Civil War
Tuesday, November 8, 2022 @ 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm
Steve Johnson
Californians have little idea of what role the state played in the Civil War, and the importance of San Francisco during that time. Hear about why Fort Point and Fort Alcatraz were bastions of Union strength, how a Confederate plot to steal gold was foiled, and why a British warship was stopped by the guns on Alcatraz.
Steve Johnson is a retired teacher with a degree in U.S. history from San Francisco State University. He has been a volunteer for the National Park Service for 15 years on Alcatraz and Fort Point. He is a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (his great-grandfather served in the Third U.S. Artillery) and of the California Historical Society. He leads historic walks for SFHS and for the Park Service at the Presidio.
Doors open at 5:45 PM for socializing and snacks; Presentations begin at 6:30.
