SFHS MEMBERS ONLY TOUR

Guides: Al Barna and Randall Ann Homan

Look up to find forgotten clusters of vintage neon signs in the streets of Chinatown. This tour includes back alleys, backstories, and some of the oldest signs in the city. Many of the vintage neon signs in Chinatown no longer light up, but it is a fascinating treasure hunt to discover these beautiful signs hidden in plain sight.

We save the best for last: the glowing signs are at the end of the tour at twilight. Photography and a lively Q&A are encouraged. Be prepared to walk 1.5 hours, with a rest stop at the Golden Gate Chinese Fortune Cookie Factory in Ross Alley.

San Francisco Neon authors and photographers Al Barna and Randall Ann Homan have opened San Franciscans’ eyes to the wonders of the many neon signs around the city. They offer five unique SF Neon walking tours (visit sfneon.org) featuring local history with architectural and graphic design insights to the city’s unique legacy of surviving neon signs.

We are pleased to present this free walking tour for SFHS members and their guests. The number of participants is limited for each tour, so you must RSVP. Call (415) 537-1105, ext. 0 or email rsvp@sfhistory.org at least 48 hours before the tour, and we will give you the meeting place. THE TOUR IS FULL – please contact us if you want to be added to the waitlist.
